Objective. The objective of this research was to identify retrospectively the alienating behaviors and the parental bonding that occurred in an Italian sample of adults whose had parents separated or divorced and their associations with self-esteem and psychological distress. Methods. Four hundred seventy adults in Chieti, Italy, completed an anonymous and confidential survey regarding their childhood exposure to parental alienating behaviors (using the Baker Strategy Questionnaire), quality of the parent-child relationship (using Parental Bonding Instruments), self-esteem (using Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale), and global psychological distress (using Global Severity Index of Symptom Checklist-90-Revised). Results. About 80% of the sample reported some exposure to parental alienating behaviors; about 65-70% of the sample has perceived non optimal parenting by mother and by father; individuals who experienced affectionless control (low care and high overprotection) reported significantly higher exposure to parental loyalty conflict behaviors. Overall rates of reported exposure to low care, and overprotection and parental loyalty conflict behaviors were statistically significantly associated with self-esteem as well as the measure of current psychological distress. Results revealed that exposure to parental loyalty conflict behaviors and self-esteem were associated with psychological distress over and above the effects of parental bonding and age. Conclusions. The pattern of findings supports the theory that children exposed to dysfunctional parenting, and with low self-esteem are at risk for their long-term psychological functioning. Implications for health policy changes and strengthening social services are discussed

Procedures and operating instructions for diagnosis in vascular anomalies and pathology

In the last 30 years a revolution has occurred in the diagnosis and management of vascular anomalies. The great changes began with Mulliken and Glowacki separation of hemangiomas and vascular anomalies. Their work has now morphed into the ISSVA classification. Subsequently the discovery of the significance of the presence of GLUT-1 in the diagnosis of the hemangiomas of infancy gave us a new marker in our quest for accurate classification. Now genetic breakthroughs have led us into a \u201cStar Wars\u201d like environment in the experimental laboratory. During all these events the critical role of the pathologist has become more evident. Understanding the histopathology of anomalies has greatly aided in our approach to therapies. Moreover, genetic findings do not have full significance without the morphologic framework

Multi-scale analysis of lung computed tomography images

A computer-aided detection (CAD) system for the identification of lung internal nodules in low-dose multi-detector helical Computed Tomography (CT) images was developed in the framework of the MAGIC-5 project. The three modules of our lung CAD system, a segmentation algorithm for lung internal region identification, a multi-scale dot-enhancement filter for nodule candidate selection and a multi-scale neural technique for false positive finding reduction, are described. The results obtained on a dataset of low-dose and thin-slice CT scans are shown in terms of free response receiver operating characteristic (FROC) curves and discussed.Comment: 18 pages, 12 low-resolution figure

Diginyc partial hydatidiform mole with increased fetal nuchal translucency and ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome.

PURPOSE OF INVESTIGATION Hydatidiform mole (HM) is an abnormal pregnancy characterized by proliferation of cytotrophoblast and syncytiotrophoblast and vesicular swelling of placental villi. The fetus or embryo can be absent or abnormal. HMs can be complete or partial. CASE REPORT A case of diginyc partial HM at 12 weeks of gestational age was referred to the present center of prenatal diagnosis. The patient showed ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome. At ultrasonography, increased fetal nuchal translucency (NT) with fetal anomaly was evident, without sonographic signs of placental mole. Pregnancy was terminated with legal abortion. RESULTS Partial HM (PHM) was suspected by ultrasonographic fetal markers with ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, but the diagnosis was performed only with fluorescent in situ hybridization. In particular fetal NT appeared increased also in diginyc mole. CONCLUSION In order to improve the detection rate of PHM, routine histological examinations may be associated to fluorescent in situ hybridization in all cases of fetal anomalies

Impact of neuropeptide substance P an inflammatory compound on arachidonic acid compound generation

    Get PDF
There is much evidence that neuropeptide substance P is involved in neurogenic inflammation and is an important neurotransmitter and neurmodulator compound. In addition, substance P plays an important role in inflammation and immunity. Macrophages can be activated by substance P which provokes the release of inflammatory compounds such as interleukins, chemokines and growth factors. Substance P is involved in the mechanism of pain through the trigeminal nerve which runs through the head, temporal and sinus cavity. Substance P also activates mast cells to release inflammatory mediators such as arachindonic acid compound, cytokines/chemokines and histamine. The release of these chemical mediators is crucial for inflammatory response. Among these mediators there are prostoglandins and leukotrines. Here we review the impact of substance P on inflammatory compounds

Feasibility of a Novel Sparse Orthogonal Collimator–Based Preclinical Total Marrow Irradiation for Enhanced Dosimetric Conformality

    Get PDF
Total marrow irradiation (TMI) has significantly improved radiation conditioning for hematopoietic cell transplantation in hematologic diseases by reducing conditioning-induced toxicities and improving survival outcomes in relapsed/refractory patients. Recently, preclinical three-dimensional image–guided TMI has been developed to enhance mechanistic understanding of the role of TMI and to support the development of experimental therapeutics. However, a dosimetric comparison between preclinical and clinical TMI reveals that the preclinical TMI treatment lacks the ability to reduce the dose to some of the vital organs that are very close to the skeletal system and thus limits the ability to evaluate radiobiological relevance. To overcome this limit, we introduce a novel Sparse Orthogonal Collimator (SOC)–based TMI and evaluate its ability to enhance dosimetric conformality. The SOC-TMI–based dose modulation technique significantly improves TMI treatment planning by reducing radiation exposures to critical organs that are close to the skeletal system that leads to reducing the gap between clinical and preclinical TMI
